چکیده

We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the HST to obtain optical imaging of a sample of 8 galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 1.3. The ACS data provides accurate photometry and the ACS high angular resolution makes it possible to obtain crucial morphological information of the cluster galaxy populations. These data are supported by X-ray observations and by ground based imaging and multi-object spectroscopy. We will present results from this multi-wavelength study which is providing a comprehensive view of the evolution of structures in the universe since z ∼ 1. The structure of the ICM, galaxy and DM components of the clusters are presented and compared. The spectrophotometric properties of cluster galaxies are investigated in the context of galaxy evolution and the formation epoch of massive early-type galaxies in these clusters is estimated to be at z > 2. We will also present results from our study of the evolution of the Morphology-Density relation in clusters since z ∼ 1 down to the present day universe. Our cluster evolution studies are also being complemented by observations of protoclusters at redshift z >∼ 2.

The evolution of the colour - magnitude relation and of the star formation activity in galaxy clusters since z ∼ 0 . 8

We present recent results on the evolution of the colour-magnitude relation and of the star formation activity in galaxy clusters since z ∼ 0.8. Results are based on the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) an ESO large programme aimed at the study of cluster structure and cluster galaxy evolution over a significant fraction of cosmic time and are discussed in the framework of the current standa...

Near - infrared evolution of brightest cluster galaxies in the most X - ray luminous clusters since

We investigate the near-infrared evolution of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) from a sample of rich galaxy clusters since z ∼ 1. By employing an X-ray selection of LX > 1044 erg s−1, we limit environmental effects by selecting BCGs in comparably high-density regions. We find a positive relationship between X-ray and near-infrared luminosity for BCGs in clusters with LX > 5 × 1044 erg s−1. App...

Ja n 19 98 The K - band Hubble diagram for the brightest cluster galaxies : a test for galaxy formation and evolution models

The K-band Hubble diagram for a sample of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the redshift range 0 < z < 1 shows a very small scatter (0.3 magnitudes r.m.s). The BCGs exhibit very little luminos-ity evolution in this redshift range: if q 0 = 0.0 we detect no luminosity evolution; for q 0 = 0.5 we measure a small negative evolution. If the mass in stars of these galaxies had remained constant o...

The Evolution of Cluster Radio

We are conducting a deep radio survey of a sample of 25 distant (0.5 < z < 1) clusters of galaxies. Here we present a progress report. So far 17 of 25 clusters have been observed, to varying depths. We have found 33 radio sources within 0.3 Abell radii of the cluster center, of which 28 are likely associated with cluster member galaxies. A comparison of the radio luminosity function of these cl...
